ADMISSION REGULATIONS:

Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT)

All applicants must take the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT). BMAT will be used to assess scientific aptitude and will focus on scientific abilities relevant to the study of medicine. The BMAT is used, along with other information in CUZ medical school application, to help select candidates for interview.

Interviews

The standards of entry for CUZ medical school are exacting. All short-listed applicants will take a medical entry interview.  Applicants called for interview will face searching questions about their motivation, their work at school, hobbies and personal interests, as well as having to produce evidence of their academic achievements. A key question will be their reasons for wanting to become a doctor.

Age limits

Students must be at least 18 years of age at the time they start the medical degree course. There is no upper age limit, however, CUZ medical school will take account of the length of training (approximately 10 years) in relation to the length of service the candidate could provide. The early clinical contact in our programme means that younger students cannot be admitted as they would not be able to fully participate in the course.

Health Requirements

All students offered a place in the Medical School must provide a satisfactory general medical report from a registered medical practitioner (doctor) before they can be admitted. Detailed guidance regarding the health information required for admission will be provided to successful applicants following their interview.

Criminal Records Disclosure

Admission is subject to the Zambian laws regarding child protection and police checks. It is also considered important to ensure that an applicant's attitudes and values are such that he or she can reasonably be admitted to the medical profession.  Applicants will therefore be required to undertake a police check through the provisions of the Data Protection Act and provide CUZ with a police clearance.

PROGRAMME INTRODUCTION :

Medicine is the science and ‘art’ of maintaining and/or restoring human health through the examination, diagnosis and treatment of patients.  The practice of medicine combines both science as the evidence base and art in the application of this medical knowledge in combination with intuition and clinical judgement to determine the treatment plan for each patient.  Central to medicine is the patient-physician relationship established when a person with a health concern seeks a physicians’ help – the ‘medical encounter’. Other healthcare professionals similarly establish a relationship with a patient and may perform various interventions, e.g, nurses, radiographers and physiotherapists.
